Preparing for Writing

In the writing section of the EmSAT, you will be asked to write one essay of about 250 words. The question is given only in English. Your essay will be marked by two different people and given a grade of between A1-C2 on the CEFR scale. The writing section is worth 25% of your overall mark.

Here are some examples of different essay types you may be asked to write.

Opinion Essay
In this essay type, you will be shown an opinion and will be asked to write an essay about whether or not you agree with it. You can choose to agree, disagree, or give a balanced viewpoint.

Discussion Essay
This is similar to an opinion essay. You will be shown an opinion, but might be asked to write about both sides of the argument. You may also be asked for your own opinion. This is different to an opinion essay in that you will write an equal amount about both sides of the argument.

Advantages and Disadvantages Essay
This is similar to the discussion essay. You will be given a topic and asked to write about the advantages and disadvantages (positives and negatives).

Problem and Solution Essay
In this essay type, you will be given a problem and asked to think of a possible solution (or solutions).
