Interjections
Interjections are words or phrases that show strong emotions or feelings. They are not linked to other words in a sentence and can stand alone or appear at the start or end of a sentence. Interjections let us express different emotions like surprise, joy, anger, pain, or frustration.
They add extra emphasis to our words and help us convey our feelings more clearly.
Some examples of interjections in English include:
- Oh! (expressing surprise or excitement)
- Wow! (expressing amazement or admiration)
- Hey! (getting someone’s attention or expressing surprise)
- Ouch! (expressing pain or discomfort)
- Alas! (expressing sadness or disappointment)
Interjections are not necessary for the grammatical structure of a sentence, but they can add emotion, emphasis, and tone to a conversation or piece of writing. It is important to use interjections appropriately and in moderation, as overusing them can make your writing or speech seem overly dramatic or exaggerated.
